Car carriers MOL will receive AI surveillance to detect car fires in a timely manner

The Japanese shipping company MOL will install cameras and an AI system (artificial intelligence) in the cargo holds of new car carriers to detect incipient car fires at an early stage.

The equipment was developed by the Israeli company Captain’s Eye. In any case, the cameras and the AI system will be installed in ten LNG-powered newbuild ships that MOL has previously ordered and which will be delivered from next year. The Japanese shipping company is still considering whether ships from the current fleet will also be retrofitted with the new alarm systems.

MOL’s car carriers have been equipped with smoke detectors for some time, but the new systems will soon be able to detect fires earlier, according to the shipping company. The AI system that Captain’s Eye has developed continuously analyzes the images captured by the surveillance cameras and immediately warns the crew members on board and also office workers on shore if anything abnormal is seen.

MOL was convinced by demonstrations of the system on board the car carrier ‘Onyx Ace’ where the system indeed responded decisively and quickly raised the alarm due to a small amount of smoke.
